HCI in New Media Art Practices

Abstract

This paper examines the role of human-computer interaction in new media art practice. It considers how interaction design, interface construction, and programming participate in the artwork’s language rather than functioning only as technical support, and discusses the tensions between conventional usability goals and artistic strategies that may depend on ambiguity, discovery, difficulty, or critical friction.
