5500: Performance, Control, and Politics

Abstract

Between June 2014 and June 2015, at least 5,500 migrants died attempting to cross the Mediterranean from Africa to Europe. This paper presents 5500, a performance in which Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 8 is disrupted by computer-controlled electrical muscle stimulation applied to the pianist’s arms. The work investigates control, embodied data representation, musical performance, and the politics of Europe’s response to migration.
