DOOR: Ethnicity in Artificial Intelligence
Abstract
DOOR is an interactive artwork designed to expose social and political consequences of artificial intelligence, computer vision, and automation. A vision system predicts the participant’s ethnicity and unlocks the door only when the participant is classified as white, making algorithmic bias and the political worldview crystallised in technical systems directly perceptible. The paper discusses the work’s design, implementation, and ethical implications.
