Ethnicity in Artificial Intelligence

Abstract

This paper presents DOOR, an interactive installation that uses an automated vision system to predict a visitor's ethnicity and to decide whether a physical door unlocks. The unequal response makes a discriminatory decision rule materially observable. Rather than accepting algorithmic classification as neutral, the installation examines how data, model categories and deployment choices embed political assumptions in everyday infrastructures.
