Smile
Abstract
Smile is a machine-vision installation in which footage of the ruins of the Gaza Strip appears on a screen only when a visitor smiles. By connecting an inferred facial expression to images of destruction, the work examines surveillance, automated emotion recognition and the social expectations built into interactive media. The juxtaposition also questions how political violence becomes mediated as spectacle.
