desaparecidos.uy
Software for a memorial artwork that assembles portraits of Uruguay’s detained-disappeared from reviewed images of contemporary people, places and streets.
2025–2026
The repository implements the three-work triptych Todos somos familiares, Están en todas partes and Seguimos buscando. Images are reviewed before use, each fragment remains linked to its source, and the software supports both portrait assembly and videos organised around a continuing search through street imagery.
The system is explicitly an artistic tool rather than an archive, biometric system, forensic instrument or resurrection medium. Source selection and approval remain available for inspection, and each generated image or video is accompanied by a record of its sources and production settings. A technical paper on provenance granularity and executable constraints in the memorial was accepted for IEEE URUCON 2026.
The project statement distinguishes the three artworks and their different use of people, place fragments and recorded searches. The repository also documents fragment provenance, source-review gates and the restrictions on how the resulting images may be understood.
The code runs as a local production system. It is not a publicly searchable archive of disappeared people, nor a service for identifying people in photographs.
