The Three Body Solution
An instrument that turns the changing distances and movements of three simulated gravitational bodies into three musical voices, accompanied by a planetary visualisation.
The Three Body Solution turns the simulated gravitational motion of three bodies into musical control messages (MIDI). Distances, velocities, phases and crossings between three bodies determine pitch, when notes begin, how strongly they are played and how long they last across three configurable musical voices.
The same simulation is available as a standalone application and as Audio Unit and VST3 plug-ins for music software. Given the same starting conditions and inputs, it produces the same musical result. The work also displays procedural planets, trajectories and a star field, making the relationship between simulated motion and musical behaviour visible.
The downloadable version for Apple silicon Macs is an early alpha release, and compatibility testing with music-production software is still in progress. It sends MIDI to other instruments, which produce the sound.
