The National Average
A generative system that turns statistical aggregation itself into the object of inspection, making selection, weighting and representational space visible and manipulable.
The National Average is a generative artwork and research system about the politics of aggregation. Rather than using an average as an apparently neutral result, it exposes the operations through which an average is produced: what is included, how things are weighted, how values are normalised, and in what representational space they are compared.
The system works with national symbols across several representational spaces, from direct image operations to learned model spaces. The point is not to discover a true or representative average nation, but to make visible that every such result depends on choices that computational systems often conceal.
The project was accepted for presentation in the NeurIPS 2026 art programme.
